How to Set Up a Nonprofit Donation Page (7-Step Guide with Examples)

create a donation pages

A donation page is an easy way for your nonprofit to accept donations and do a lot of hard work in convincing potential donors to give.

Online giving has grown significantly in recent years and your nonprofit can miss out on valuable donations if you don’t have a donation page.

Not sure how to set up a donation page for your nonprofit? We’ve got you covered!

Donorbox lets you create and customize a donation page with complete ease. Your page will be highly optimized for all devices and will integrate seamlessly with apps to give your donors a one-of-a-kind experience.

Donorbox helped 50,000+ nonprofits process over $1 Billion in donations from 40 countries.

The set-up process is simple and can take as little as only 15 minutes to get started.

Here are the 7 Steps to Set up a Donation Page:

  1. Sign up with Donorbox
  2. Enter Basic Details About Your Campaign
  3. Setting Up Donation Details
  4. Set Up Your Email Receipt to Donors
  5. Add Additional Details About Your Campaign
  6. Add Relevant Custom Fields
  7. Customize the Design of Your Donation Form

Step 1: Sign up with Donorbox

Go to the Donorbox homepage and click the ‘Org Signup’ button as highlighted in the image.

On the signup page, fill in all the fields as shown in the image below.

After you click ‘Sign Up’, there will be a couple of more steps for you to complete the signup process.

Step 2: Enter Basic Details About Your Campaign

After you’ve signed up on Donorbox, it’s time to set up your donation page.

Give your campaign a name and enter a few basic details about why you’re raising funds.

Talk about your organization’s mission and goals, and the work you carry out in line with this. According to research on donor usability, this is one of the factors that donors use when they’re deciding whether to donate.

Make your campaign text as emotive as you can. Telling stories about your supporters can work well for this.

You can also convert more donors by making them feel that their donation will make a difference. Using realistic, attainable goals can be key to this.

You can let your supporters know what $10 or $50 will be spent on, for example. This can make it more likely that you’ll secure donations and it encourages people to give more than they may otherwise have.

Step 3:  Setting Up Donation Details

You can choose the currency that your nonprofit prefers to receive donations in. Additionally, you can allow “Multiple Currencies” and select the ones that your nonprofit accepts:

Suggest a few donation amounts. Your donors will see these amounts when they use your donation page, and they can choose which one they want to use. Offering a broad range of options can make it more likely that your supporters will give.

Pro tip: Add a description with each donation amount so that donors can see the impact of their giving. This is optional but it can increase the number of donations you receive.

Here’s an example of this:

You can set a campaign goal. This is optional but it helps your supporters see how much you’re looking to raise and how close you are to the target.

When you add a campaign goal, your donation page will have a donation meter. This can encourage more donors to give to your campaign.

create a donation page

Set a minimum amount for your supporters to donate. We’ve set this at a minimum of $3 to discourage credit card scammers, but you can choose any amount above this.

You can choose whether to allow your donors to leave comments alongside their donations. This can demonstrate the impact of your work.

Create a thank you message that your donors will see after they have made their donation. This is a great opportunity to build stronger relationships with your current donors. If donors can see you appreciate their support, they’re more likely to donate again.

Use thank you messages to remind donors about the good work that your nonprofit can do as a result of donations like theirs. You can focus on specific projects or take a broader approach.

Pro-tip #1: Don’t try to secure another donation in a thank you letter. Emphasize the impact that donations will have and make your donors feel that they’re making a real difference to your work.

Pro-tip #2: Take your appreciation a step further by redirecting donors to a thank you page after they’ve donated.

Step 4: Set Up Your Email Receipt to Donors

The next step involves creating and customizing the email receipt that is sent to your supporters after they donate.

You can send yourself a test email so you can see how everything looks before it goes out to donors.

You can also ask your supporters if they want to subscribe to your mailing list and check that they agree to GDPR terms:

Step 5: Add Additional Details About Your Campaign

Choose the information that your nonprofit collects about donors and how often donors can choose to give.

You can also decide whether to include additional form fields on your donation page, including:

You can also add details about your nonprofit’s legal compliance and include a disclaimer.

You can choose the URL for your donation form here too. This allows your nonprofit to choose a memorable URL.

Step 6: Add Relevant Custom Fields

You can choose to add custom fields to your donation page.

Some good custom questions to ask include:

  • Are you interested in volunteering with us?
  • How did you hear about us / our campaign?
  • Is this a gift donation?
  • Which of our focus areas matters most to you?
  • Are you part of an affiliation group?

Step 7: Customize the Design of Your Donation Form

You can customize the design of your donation form in line with your nonprofit’s branding.

You can add a custom background to your donation page, which can be great for demonstrating the impact of your work. Use a high-quality image that is eye-catching and demonstrates the positive effects of the work your nonprofit carries out.

Bonus Step: Promoting Your Donation Page

Now that your Donorbox donation page is up and running, how can you let your supporters know about it?

It’s easy to let your website visitors know they can donate through your Donorbox donation page.

On your campaign page, you’ll see a link to preview your form. You can click this to retrieve a shareable link with your supporters.

Alternatively, you can add a link to your donation page too.

Copy and paste the link into your web editor.
